Custom AI Agent Development vs. AI Employee Products

"Custom AI agent development" and "AI employee products" solve the same broad problem — getting AI to do real work for a business — from opposite directions. One starts from your exact process and builds around it. The other starts from a defined job and asks your process to fit it. Neither is better in the abstract. Mixing them up wastes money either way, so here's the actual difference.

What a productized AI employee is

Our own AKKIVO is the clearest example we can point to, because we built it. An AI employee there is a configured role with clear ownership: who it serves, which channels it uses, what knowledge it may rely on, what it can decide, and when it has to hand off to a person. AI Receptionist is the one currently available for purchase — it answers calls, greets the caller, answers routine questions from approved knowledge, and routes people to the right next step. The rest of AKKIVO's catalog (customer support, sales, knowledge, operations, workflow) is still in development.

The trade-off is straightforward: a product like this is fast to start and cheap to trial, because the job it does is already defined and already built. What you get is exactly what the product does — no more, no less.

What custom AI agent development is

This is what we do at AkkisTech when a client's need doesn't match a product's shape. It's bespoke software engineering, not a subscription: an agent built for one business's specific, non-standard workflow — a research pipeline, a monitoring job across systems that don't talk to each other, a procurement process with rules a generic tool can't encode.

The trade-off here runs the other way. It's slower to start and it's a real engineering engagement, not a signup form. What you get back is an agent that fits your actual process, not a process reshaped to fit someone else's product.

How to actually tell which one you need

If the job is common across many businesses — answering calls, qualifying inbound leads, routine customer support — a product gets you there faster and cheaper than building it yourself. That's what AI employee products are for.

If the workflow is genuinely specific to how your business operates — a lookup that spans three internal systems no vendor has integrated, a compliance step nobody has modeled as a product feature, a data pipeline unique to your operations — that's a custom-development conversation.

One practical tell: if you catch yourself explaining "it's basically like [product], except..." more than once in the same conversation, you're probably describing a custom build wearing a product's clothes.

Where AkkisTech and AKKIVO fit together

AkkisTech is the studio; AKKIVO is one of the things we built and now operate as its own product. When a prospective client's need matches what AKKIVO already does well, we say so directly — building a custom version of something AKKIVO already sells would be a bad use of anyone's budget. When it doesn't match, that's where our own AI agent development work starts.

If you're trying to figure out which side of this your own situation falls on, the fastest way to find out is to describe the actual workflow, not the category it sounds like it belongs to. If you want a ready-to-use AI employee instead of custom development, see AKKIVO directly.
